The Salvation Army has several opportunities for primary and secondary school students to get involved with in Western Australia.
This takes the form of the following plus much, much more:
Participating in a workshop or presentation, volunteering their time, or fundraising, students will gain a greater understanding of issues facing thousands of Australians every day.
It’s important to note that the numbers of attendees and durations listed here are our preferred configurations for workshops, to allow us to get the most out of each workshop and what they offer. We strongly encourage sticking to these guidelines when booking a workshop with us but understand that the logistics of some of our timeframes may be tricky to facilitate for all, and so we can be flexible here upon request.
Half and full day workshops are available and are comprised of individual workshops listed above and can be tailored to suit a schools needs, and hosted either on campus or at our Centre.

Perth Homelessness City Tour (Allow 3hrs)
Commencing at Moort-ak Waadiny (Wellington Square), East Perth, this tour uses the cityscape as a classroom as we explore how homelessness is experienced in Perth. As we traverse the footpath, we stop in key locations to inspire discussion and share stories. Students will learn about some of the support services available in the CBD and better understand the drivers of homelessness. The tour concludes at the Salvation Army’s Perth Fortress where students will hear about the work of the Salvation Army as Australia’s leading provider of homelessness services. The tour provides a deepened understanding of homelessness that challenges stereotypes and should inspire a sense of social justice.
Level: Secondary (Year 8+)
Location: Start - Moort-ak Waadiny (Wellington Square), East Perth
End – 333 William Street, Perth.
Attendees: Maximum of 32 students per tour. Large group sizes will be split into two smaller groups.
Duration: Allow 3hrs. This can include time for lunch/snack. Please discuss timeframes at the point of booking with Salvos Schools WA.
Cost: This workshop incurs a fee (typically $350 + GST), but cost should not be a barrier to accessing this education, so please contact us to discuss alternative options.
ABCD (90 – 120mins)
In this highly participatory simulation activity, the classroom becomes representative of society and income inequality in Australia. Each student follows the life and financial position of someone over a three-month period. Students consider the factors that influence an individual’s financial situation and ability to secure housing and everyday necessities. We conclude by exploring the impact of social support and how young people can contribute to a more equitable society.

Responding to Homelessness (55mins)
In this incursion, your students will hear from The Salvation Army, Australia's leading provider of homelessness services. We will use interactive activities and discussion to challenge stereotypes and our personal or cultural biases to better understand the realities of homelessness in Australia. Through evidence-based discussion and stories of lived experience, the workshop encourages students to take social justice action and move forward with increased empathy for those in hardship.

Duration: 55 minutes
Solving Struggles (55mins)
This workshop is designed to introduce the Salvation Army’s Doorways service. Doorways provides emergency relief and holistic case management with referral to internal and external support services – we think of it as ‘opening doors’ to see people out of times of struggle.
In this workshop, we will discuss the importance of providing material aid, such as grocery items and the difference it makes to people in hardship. Using an interactive activity, we will explore cost of living pressures and the role of the Salvation Army to ensure no one is left in need. This workshop provides an insight into key welfare support in Australia and students should leave the incursion with the knowledge of this service and an increased sense of social justice.

Community and Caring (55mins)
This primary school program introduces the Salvation Army and encourages young people to recognise their social impact. Using a range of fun activities and videos, students explore the concept of ‘caring’ and the ways that children and young people can positively support their communities and contribute to social change.
Level: Primary (Grades 4-6)
Location: In school
Attendees: 25 - 50 students
Duration: 45 minutes
