Jesus and Christianity

Who is Jesus?

We believe God is the Creator of the universe and all that is in it. His divine son is Jesus.

When God created the world, everything was perfect. But the first humans made a big mistake and this separated them from God. Life was no longer perfect. Sin had entered the world. And humankind from then on was separated from God.

At Christmas, we remember when Jesus came into the world as a baby. He was human but still God. The Bible calls him “Immanuel”, which means God with us. This was the first step of God’s rescue plan to have a better relationship with his children again.

Jesus came to Earth to walk alongside people (his creation) and experience life with them. His ultimate purpose was to die on the cross to pay the price for the wrongdoings of humanity. This act of true love would serve to reunite us with our Father God.

Acknowledging our wrongful ways and asking for God’s forgiveness refers to “salvation”. When we experience salvation through Jesus, we have connection with God. We can experience the never-ending, unstoppable love of God.

After Jesus died on the cross, he rose back to life. He conquered death. Because of this, we can have hope for a life beyond our earthly one.

What is a Christian?

The word “Christ” is often used after the name of Jesus: Jesus Christ. In Greek, “Christ” means “anointed one”. It refers to a recognition of Jesus being both human and divine.

Anyone who chooses to have a relationship with God through Jesus can call themselves a “Christian”.

Jesus and The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is a Christian movement. It grew out of a passion to see people come into a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Motivated by the love of Jesus, our mission is caring for people, creating faith pathways, building healthy communities and working for justice.

What can Jesus mean for my life?

During his time on Earth, Jesus showed compassion to the downtrodden and outcasts. He healed people’s sicknesses, he valued the role of women and he welcomed criminals to join him for dinner.

He was concerned about the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of all people.

We believe that Jesus cares about you and wants to do a transforming work in your heart. He wants to heal your hurt and swap it for abundant life. God wants to have a relationship with you.
