The Adelaide AOD Services - Sobering Up Unit and Warrondi Engage and Link Program offers persons over the age of 18 a safe environment in which to overcome the immediate effects of alcohol and/or other drug intoxication. This includes persons apprehended by police under the Public Intoxication Act (SA). The service operates free of charge and is a 30 bed facility which is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week. It encourages clients to consider the harms associated with drug use and offers advocacy and referral to AOD and additional services including others offered by the TI network such as the Warrondi Transitional Support and Engage and Link programs. Referral to the program is not necessary, with all clients assessed on presentation. Nevertheless, the Sobering Up Unit receives a number of referrals from hospitals, family members and friends, the police and a variety of additional services. The majority of persons accessing the Sobering Up Unit are homeless and have alcohol or other drug dependency issues and many are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin.
