Environmental sustainability

The Salvation Army has always been at the forefront of making a positive impact within our communities. We believe in good not just for people, but also our planet, and work towards ensuring our programs and practices are sustainable.

The Salvation Army’s first Environmental Sustainability policy was approved by the Board in July 2020 — a living document that outlines our commitment to measure and decrease our environmental impact. This includes minimising the use of consumables, improving our indoor environmental quality, energy and water use, transportation, renovations, and greenhouse gas emissions.

A snapshot of sustainability achievements include:

  • 4.2MW of solar energy generated across The Salvation Army rooftops.
  • Solar farms.
    • The Basin (Victoria), adding 5MW of clean, renewable energy into our capacity each year.
    • Chillamurra (New South Wales and Queensland) adding 4MW to total solar capacity.
  • Salvos Stores is a recognised leader in the circular economy. Some of their 2022/23 achievements include:
    • 30.5 tonnes diverted from landfill through reuse and recycling.
    • 42 million items reused.
    • 1 million tonnes of Co2 emissions avoided through reuse.
