Your emergency support made a difference

We are only halfway through the year and already your kindness has touched so many lives and communities affected by disaster.

Australia-wide Salvos have been on the ground providing emergency support and caring for people in the days, weeks and months after a disaster.

You have helped us feed fire fighters and first responders, such as those who fought the 10km fire front in south-western Victoria earlier this year. 27 families were directly impacted by this bushfire, through the loss of their homes or livelihoods. The Salvation Army was able to provide $30,000 in disaster relief as well as practical help with toiletries, towels and grocery vouchers. They also continue to work with local government and the community, helping to heal psychological scars.

In Western Australia, emergency teams have already attended 35 separate incidents and served 6,956 meals to first responders and people affected by an emergency.

In the Northern Territory significant support was provided to those evacuated after flooding in the Daly River community, and Salvos were on the ground in Ingram Queensland to help with the cleanup and to distribute food vouchers after rain and flooding cut off access to the township.

In the town of Tathra NSW fires destroyed more than 70 homes and our emergency teams contributed to the care of 300 people in evacuation centres with meals, goods and vouchers.

Most importantly, you help The Salvation Army provide the long-haul support that people affected by a disaster often need. As Captain Robert Champion explains, “Some issues don’t surface for a while after a disaster, so it is important that we continue to check-in with people and provide support for as long as needed.”
