Movie Review: The Christmas Candle

4 December 2013

Set in 1890, the story of the Christmas Candle has been treasured by the people of Gladbury, in England, for 200 years.

Every 25 years, as the legend goes, an angel visits the candle maker, bestowing upon the candle a single miracle. When one lucky villager is selected to receive the candle, all they must do is light their candle and pray.

When David Richmond (Hans Matheson, Sherlock Holmes, Clash of the Titans), an ex Salvation Army minister from London, takes up the parish in Gladbury, he is sceptical of the village and the story he has stumbled into. The Reverend believes that a miracle is not contained in a candle, but is found in good deeds and kindness. Emily Barstow (Samantha Barks, Les Miserables), a young lady from the village, becomes the most unlikely friend to the Reverend, also choosing to not believe in the miracle of the Christmas Candle.

In an effort to move Gladbury into the future and away from their dependency on candles, the Reverend triggers a series of unwelcomed events that will change his views forever. As he tries to rectify his ways, he finds that the Christmas Candle may hold a miracle after all.

Starring Susan Boyle (Britain’s Got Talent contestant 2009) in her debut feature film, alongside John Hannah (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and James Cosmo (Braveheart), The Christmas Candle is a story for the whole family this season.
