The Salvation Army welcomes preliminary report of Amnesty International
23 November 2012
The Salvation Army welcomes and provides unequivocal support for the preliminary report of Amnesty International calling for immediate action to address the living conditions of asylum seekers on Nauru.
The Salvation Army’s Regional Director of Offshore Missions, Major Paul Moulds, who is currently working on Manus Island said: “The Salvation Army’s mission is to provide welfare support services to the asylum seekers. We are passionate about seeing people's lives improved while they are on Nauru. There are numerous opportunities for asylum seekers to make this happen, and we are committed to this objective, and will work with the relevant agencies to help improve these opportunities.”
Tent accommodation and local conditions including extreme heat have an impact on asylum seekers’ ability to focus on activities which The Salvation Army is tasked to provide.
The Salvation Army adds its voice to Amnesty International’s call for improvements to the Topside Camp, while acknowledging every effort is being made by the Governments of Australia and Nauru to progress plans to begin construction of more permanent structures.
