The Salvation Army Launches Kurnell Disaster Appeal

20 December 2015

At the request of Sutherland Shire Council, The Salvation Army has launched the Sutherland Shire Mayor’s Kurnell Disaster Appeal. The appeal has been launched to provide an opportunity for the public and the business community to contribute financially to the recovery operation in Kurnell.

The tornado that descended on Kurnell on Wednesday 16 December devastated parts of the Kurnell community. It has significantly affected many of the residents and businesses of Kurnell, displacing a number of families and severely damaging property and trees. Sutherland Shire Council continue to work with emergency services and welfare organisations to clean up the area and restore the community to normal.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce said “the Kurnell disaster has left the community with significant challenges through which they will need major support for the foreseeable future. Recovery can be a lengthy process and Sutherland Shire Council is committed to the Kurnell community for the long term.”

“Sutherland Shire Council appreciates the willingness of the Salvation Army to establish the Sutherland Shire Mayor’s Kurnell Disaster Appeal. I know we will be able to raise much needed funds for the Kurnell community as the Sutherland Shire is a generous and caring community,” said the Mayor.

“It is in the times of challenge, such as natural disasters, that we see communities stand shoulder to shoulder to support each other. There is no doubt many residents and businesses of the Sutherland Shire and further afield are keen to support the Kurnell community and will continue to the disaster fund,” The Salvation Army’s Major Bruce Harmer said.
