Salvos devastated by homeless funding cuts, Newcastle

13 June 2014

The Salvation Army is devastated to learn that all its homelessness services in the Newcastle region have not been funded in the latest NSW Government funding announcements.

Major Gavin Watts, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army Newcastle region, said,
"We acknowledge that governments have limited resources and have to use them as wisely as they can across the state. Still, it's a massive blow to hear that The Salvation Army has lost its funding for all homelessness services in the Newcastle area.

"Most of all, our concern is for our valued staff who will be directly impacted by these adjustments, and also the many clients who have built up a relationship with The Salvation Army over many years who will now have a change of service provider," he said.

"The Salvation Army has been providing homelessness services in Newcastle for decades and is committed to the Newcastle region for the long term. We will continue to provide as many services as we can in this community and we’re looking at what level of services we will be able to provide within homelessness," said Major Watts.
