Salvos call for 100,000 volunteers to doorknock

17 April 2014

One in 20 Australians will need the help of the Salvos this year – and now the Salvos need your support.

The Salvation Army is asking Australians to give a few hours of their time to the annual Red Shield Appeal Doorknock on May 24-25.

“The Salvation Army hopes to raise $10 million over doorknock weekend and it’s only through the generosity of volunteers that we will be able to do this,” says The Salvation Army’s spokesperson Dr Bruce Redman.

The Salvos want to hear from individuals, businesses, local associations, schools and local community groups who could give a few hours of their time across the weekend. The Red Shield Appeal Doorknock is integral to providing the funds so the Salvos can continue to help those who need it.

Money raised through the Red Shield Appeal is immediately returned to the community through The Salvation Army’s social services across Australia.

In the last year, The Salvation Army assisted more than 550,000 people in their own personal crises. A survey of Salvation Army clients last year revealed the extent of social and economic deprivation being experienced by Australians:

  • 28% cannot afford a substantial meal even once a day
  • 92% have little or no savings for emergencies
  • 27% cannot afford heating or cooling in even one room
  • 51% go without meals each day (often in favour of their children).

“By volunteering you can help the Salvos care for the one million vulnerable Australians that we will come into contact with this across the country this year,” said Dr Redman.

It is volunteers that are the heartbeat of The Salvation Army – please consider joining us for a day.
