Brendan Walks Into Canberra

After an epic 40 day trek from Melbourne, The Salvation Army’s Major Brendan Nottle will finally arrive at Canberra’s Parliament House on Monday 16th October with to meet with key government representatives to discuss the establishment of a national nonpartisan strategy to help end homelessness in Australia.

Joining Major Nottle on the last kilometre of his walk to Parliament House will be the Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Bill Shorten MP.

"I'm really proud of Brendan. This is an amazing thing he is doing. Homelessness is a national crisis that's too often hidden from view. We've got to do more. That means policies to make housing more affordable, help kick start investment in social housing, and improve options for women and children escaping violence. Every time I catch up with Brendan I learn something new and I'm looking forward to hearing about his journey. I'll definitely be there to shake his hand when he arrives in Canberra,” said Mr Shorten.

Along his walk, Major Nottle has visited regional towns in Victoria and New South Wales to understand first-hand the challenges these communities face as they tackle the complex issues contributing to homelessness. Major Nottle has gathered many stories from community members and will be sharing them in Canberra next Monday.

Major Nottle will kick start the day with a community breakfast at the Rose Gardens near Old Parliament House to celebrate the completion of his walk. Attending the breakfast will be Salvation Army staff, clients, volunteers and members of the public. Canberra locals are invited to join him at the breakfast to show support for the establishment of a strategy to help end homelessness in Australia.

At approximately 10.00am, Major Nottle will commence the last steps of his 700km walk from Old Parliament House to New Parliament house with the Hon. Bill Shorten MP.
