$5 million gift to the Salvos just in time for Christmas

16 January 2018

The Salvation Army is pleased to announce it has received a generous philanthropic donation of $5 million from The Cory Charitable Foundation.

The donation will go towards the construction of a new affordable and social housing complex in North Brisbane, which will be completed in 2018. The complex will consist of 25–30 dwellings that will benefit individuals and families with children who are experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness.

Doug Cory, a spokesman for The Cory Charitable Foundation, says the foundation’s decision to give to The Salvation Army was influenced by his own childhood experiences.

"I support the Salvos because as a boy, my mother was only one step away from being homeless with nine children, except for the kindness of many including The Salvation Army," Mr Cory said.

"This project will help a lot of folks now, and for many years to come. Many times people need a safe roof over their heads first, and that is a good starting point for them to then get the other services they need."

"I have had a successful business career, so I am fortunate to be in a position to help. It is satisfying knowing that you are helping some of the big needs in society."

Derek Brown, The Salvation Army’s Queensland Development Manager, says the Salvos are thrilled to have the support of The Cory Charitable Foundation.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of The Cory Charitable Foundation. This donation will make a huge difference in the lives of so many Queenslanders who are in need of a home,” Mr Brown said.

“With housing getting and more and more expensive in Brisbane and across Australia, this donation has come at such a crucial time. It’s only through the generosity of organisations like The Cory Charitable Foundation that The Salvation Army is able to give hope where it’s needed most.”

The Salvos urge anyone in need of assistance this Christmas to reach out. For anyone who would like to donate The Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal, a gift of $29 will allow the Salvos to put food on the table and presents under the tree for Aussies in need.
